IGP's special operations team begins security sweep in Tamale
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP)’s Special Operations Team has commenced a major security operation in Tamale following its arrival in the Northern Regional capital at dawn on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The 50-member team, led by ASP Bawa Abdul Jalil, travelled in a convoy of eight service vehicles—including the Black Maria—and took a brief rest before beginning the day’s engagements.
At about 1:00 p.m., the team reported to the Northern Regional Police Headquarters, where they were received by the Northern Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and the Northern Regional Police Commander.
The Regional Minister and the MCE expressed strong appreciation for the deployment, praising the IGP’s initiative and urging the officers to execute their duties with urgency, dedication, and professionalism.
They emphasised the importance of the operation in restoring public confidence and enhancing safety in the region.
The Northern Regional Police Commander also welcomed the team and outlined several pressing security challenges confronting the region.
These include:
The growing sale and distribution of illicit drugs and contraband goods
Increasing drug abuse, particularly among the youth
A rise in robbery incidents in parts of the region
He encouraged the team to uphold high morale and unity, stressing that teamwork, discipline, and coordination would be crucial to delivering successful outcomes.
Following the briefing, the Special Operations Team redeployed into Tamale township and neighbouring communities to begin active operations.
Their activities for the day included enhanced visibility patrols, intelligence gathering, and other targeted actions aimed at suppressing criminal activities and strengthening overall security within the area.
Police officials say a comprehensive report will be submitted after the conclusion of the mission and consolidation of all operational findings.
