CK Akonnor makes history with second Coach of the Month Award in Kenya
Former Ghana national team coach CK Akonnor has made history in East Africa after becoming the first coach to win the SportPesa League Coach of the Month award twice in the 2025/26 season, following his latest triumph for January.
The Gor Mahia head coach was crowned Coach of the Month on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, after steering the club to the top of the league standings with an impressive run of results.
Akonnor edged out competition from Osborne Monday of Murang’a SEAL, Bernard Mwalala of Bandari FC, and Fred Ambani of AFC Leopards to claim the honour.
During January, Gor Mahia recorded five wins and one draw in six matches, scoring 15 goals, conceding four, and keeping three clean sheets. The strong form saw the side climb to 40 points, opening a four-point gap over second-placed AFC Leopards.
The team’s standout performances included a dominant victory over Kariobangi Sharks and a spirited comeback from two goals down to defeat Murang’a SEAL 3-2.
For his achievement, Akonnor received a customised SportPesa League Coach of the Month trophy and a cash prize of KSh75,000 (GHS6,398), sponsored by SportPesa.
The January award marks his second win of the season, having first claimed the honour in October 2025.
