2026 FIFA WC: Panama coach Christiansen targets strong showing against Ghana, England and Croatia
Panama coach Thomas Christiansen has declared that Panama national football team will aim to compete strongly rather than simply participate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Panama secured qualification for only their second appearance at the global tournament and have been drawn in Group Halongside Ghana national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
Speaking in an interview with FIFA, the Danish-Spanish tactician said his team has developed significantly in recent years and is ready to challenge stronger opponents.
Christiansen, who is Panama’s longest-serving head coach, noted that the national side has become more competitive against traditional powers in the CONCACAF region.
According to him, Panama has proven capable of matching teams such as United States men's national soccer team, Canada men's national soccer team and Mexico national football team, even if victories over Mexico have remained elusive during his tenure.
He expressed confidence that the same competitive spirit can be carried into their World Cup group matches against Ghana, Croatia and England.
Christiansen acknowledged the quality of the three opponents but stressed that his side intends to approach the games with belief and determination rather than caution.
Panama will begin their campaign against Ghana before facing Croatia and England in their remaining group matches.
The coach also urged supporters to raise expectations for the national team, insisting that simply scoring or avoiding heavy defeats should no longer be viewed as success.
Instead, he said the team’s goal is to perform in a way that makes Panamanians proud while proving they can compete with some of the strongest sides in world football
