The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations to 28 teams and stage the tournament every four years, in a bid to broaden participation and strengthen competition across the continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, speaking at a press briefing in Tanzania, said the proposal is designed to give more countries the opportunity to compete at the highest level while improving the overall quality and global appeal of African football.

“The AFCON as we know it now is one of Africa’s most important sporting events,” Motsepe said.

“We want to increase it to 28 countries, and, as we have said, hold it every four years. This will allow more nations to compete at the highest level, showcase their talent, and contribute to the growth of African football.”

CAF will consult member associations and other stakeholders to determine the format, qualification system and logistics for the expanded tournament.

If approved, the move would mark a major shift in the structure of the competition and open the door for more nations to feature on Africa’s biggest football stage.

While many have welcomed the proposal as a progressive step toward inclusivity, some observers have expressed reservations about scheduling demands, travel requirements and maintaining competitive balance.
