NDC Legal Director questions foreign calls for reinstatement of Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice

The Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Godwin Tameklo, has criticised the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) for their recent call demanding the reinstatement of Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude A.E.S. Torkornoo.
Speaking on the matter on his Facebook wall, Mr. Tameklo questioned why foreign legal bodies should attempt to dictate Ghana’s judicial processes, suggesting that such actions undermine the country’s sovereignty.
“Can the Ghana Bar Association tell what should happen to the Chief Justice of the UK?
Let’s respect ourselves,” he stated.
Mr. Tameklo argued that Ghana’s Constitution clearly outlines procedures for handling petitions against justices, and stressed that due process must be allowed to run its course without external interference.
His comments come after the Bar Council of England and Wales and the CLA jointly expressed concern over the suspension, warning that it threatened judicial independence and the rule of law.
The debate continues to draw sharp reactions at home and abroad, with legal experts and political actors divided over the matter.
