GBA President calls for review of Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension

The National President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Madam Efua Ghartey, has expressed grave concern over the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, calling for a thorough review of the decision.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark Martyrs Day, Madam Ghartey described the development as a troubling precedent for the independence of the Judiciary and the integrity of constitutional governance in Ghana.
“The suspension of the Chief Justice, under the current circumstances, raises critical questions about the protection of judicial independence and the potential politicisation of the bench,” she stated.
She urged all constitutional bodies involved in the process to exercise utmost restraint and adhere strictly to the principles of due process and fairness as outlined under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Madam Ghartey emphasised that while the Judiciary must be held accountable, such accountability must be pursued in a manner that preserves public confidence in the justice system and protects judges from undue political interference.
The GBA President further called on the relevant authorities, including the President and the Judicial Council, to consider initiating an impartial and transparent review of the suspension, warning that failure to do so could erode public trust in democratic institutions.
“The Ghana Bar Association will continue to defend the rule of law and advocate for processes that protect the dignity and independence of the judiciary,” she added.
