Health Minister engages pharmaceutical firms to position Ghana as Africa’s drug manufacturing hub

Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has met with leaders of Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry in a high-level strategic meeting aimed at strengthening local drug production and positioning the country as a leading pharmaceutical hub in Africa.
The meeting, held on Monday, brought together major pharmaceutical producers to discuss ways of boosting production capacity, enhancing quality standards, and improving access to essential medicines.
Minister Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local manufacturers through policies, infrastructure, and incentives designed to scale up operations.
“Ghana is ready to lead Africa in pharmaceutical production.
We have the expertise, the capacity, and the political will to make this vision a reality,” he said.
He stressed that a vibrant pharmaceutical sector is vital not only for Ghana’s health security but also for economic growth, job creation, and regional competitiveness.
The initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader industrialisation drive, which seeks to reduce reliance on imported medicines, strengthen healthcare delivery, and foster innovation in the sector.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the move, describing it as timely in view of growing demand for affordable, high-quality medicines across Africa.
They expressed confidence that with the right level of government support, Ghana could achieve self-sufficiency in drug production while expanding its presence in regional markets.
Discussions also focused on tightening regulatory frameworks, aligning with international standards, and encouraging research and development to ensure long-term growth and sustainability of the industry.
