Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, has pledged stricter enforcement and stronger accountability measures to tackle Ghana’s sanitation challenges.

He made the commitment at the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day (NSD) on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina.

Under the revised programme, the exercise will be observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions and 261 districts.

Mr. Ibrahim said the initiative is designed to restore discipline in public spaces, empower local Assemblies by making sanitation a key performance indicator, and mobilise citizens for collective action.

To strengthen accountability, the Ministry announced new measures, including:

A dedicated sanitation hotline for citizens to report nuisances.

A central dashboard to track district-level performance.

Mandatory monthly reports from local Assemblies.

The Minister called on traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, youth groups, and the media to rally behind the campaign.

“Let us embrace this initiative, and together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ghana,” he urged.
