Dr Gideon Boako champions green industrial policy at KNUST Sustainability Conference
Tano North MP, Dr Gideon Boako, has urged the government to develop a comprehensive Green Industrial Policy Framework to guide Ghana’s industrial transformation in line with sustainability goals.
Speaking as part of a panel session at the 2025 International Sustainability Conference at the KNUST Graduate School of Business, Dr Boako said such a framework was necessary to coordinate all sectoral policies and investments around sustainable industrialisation.
Dr Boako, who also doubles as an Economics and Finance lecturer at the KNUST School of Business (currently on leave of absence to serve as an MP), noted that although Ghana had taken steps towards green growth — including the launch of the Ghana Green Finance Taxonomy in 2024 — there was still no fully harmonised policy direction.
He identified major challenges undermining sustainable industrialisation, such as high electricity costs, limited access to affordable financing, inadequate technical skills, and a low culture of sustainability among businesses.
“Many enterprises still view sustainability as an extra cost rather than an opportunity for innovation and long-term savings,” he said.
The MP also highlighted emerging opportunities in agro-industrial sustainability, digital transformation, and renewable energy, stressing that Ghana could anchor green growth in agriculture, waste recycling, and smart manufacturing.
He further proposed stronger public–private partnerships and increased investment in innovation-driven enterprises.
“If we align our industrial policy with sustainability, Ghana can achieve inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible growth that sets an example for the rest of Africa,” Dr Boako added.
He concluded that the future of Ghana’s economy would depend on how well the nation integrates environmental responsibility into industrial and business practices.
