Calm restored to Ehi but police station temporarily shut down after violent attack
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has temporarily closed the Ehi Police Station in the Ketu North of the Volta Region and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack by some residents of the town.
According to the municipal chief executive (MCE) Rev Martin Amenaki, the decision was made on the directive of the municipal security council after a group of angry youth attacked the station with stones, clubs, and other weapons leading to the injury of the municipal police commander and other officers.
The unrest was reportedly triggered by the death of a youth called D-Black stabbed at the neck by a suspect, Agbavitor Kofi, during a confrontation, when the deceased Julius Sabla, aka D-Black, went to separate the suspect and another youth who were alledgely fighting over a woman.
Police say the attack occurred around 8 pm into the night.
A reinforcement team was quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to restore calm and order but some people including the police officers were injured.
The MCE and the GPS have since engaged the deceased’s family and local community leaders, assuring them of a thorough investigation.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have begun separate inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the issue.
The police have vowed to arrest and prosecute anyone found to have participated in the violence.
MCE Rev Martin Amenaki appealed to the public to use lawful means to resolve grievances rather than resorting to acts of violence.
“The Ketu North municipal security council which I am the chairman would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence,” he said.
Meanwhile, the suspect who went unconscious is receiving treatment at the St Anthony's Hospital in Dzodze, and the injured officers at Sab-Dave Hospital.
