South Africa ready to host 2026 WAFCON amid uncertainty in Morocco
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed frustration over Morocco’s handling of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
McKenzie criticised Morocco for the lack of clear communication about hosting the tournament for a third consecutive time.
Reports have circulated that the competition may be postponed, even after CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed it would proceed as scheduled.
With only 13 days remaining before the tournament’s March 17 start, neither Morocco nor CAF has issued official updates.
“The situation regarding the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is very concerning,” McKenzie said.
“If Morocco is ready to host because of their success in the AFCON, they should confirm it. If not, South Africa has stadiums and infrastructure and stands ready to host. We will not be held hostage, and we will not allow women’s football to be treated in this manner.”
CAF has announced it will provide clarity within the next 48 hours, according to its Head of Communication, Luxolo September.
The tournament is scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3, with participating nations already preparing for competition.
