GFA brings free cancer screening to women’s football in Kumasi
Seventy-seven female footballers and match officials in Kumasi have benefited from a free breast and cervical cancer screening exercise organised by the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Medical Committee, led by Dr Abena Tannor.
The programme, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, was conducted in partnership with the Medical Women Association of Ghana (MWAG) and Hope Xchange Medical Center.
The outreach targeted Division One female footballers under the Ashanti Regional Football Association, bringing together players from eight clubs, as well as female match officials and referees, for comprehensive health checks.
Beyond the screenings, participants attended an educational session on breast and cervical cancer awareness, early detection, and the importance of routine preventive care. The session equipped the athletes with practical knowledge to help them take proactive steps toward protecting their health.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to integrate healthcare into women’s football, ensuring female athletes can access essential medical services in convenient and supportive settings.
It also underscores the GFA Medical Committee’s commitment to collaborating with regional football bodies, clubs, and healthcare partners to deliver quality healthcare directly to female footballers, safeguarding their wellbeing both on and off the pitch.
