President John Dramani Mahama has announced government backing for a proposed Mutual Health Fund for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and their families, a move aimed at improving access to healthcare and strengthening the financial security of service personnel.

Under the arrangement, the National Security Secretariat will provide seed funding for the welfare trust fund to ensure its sustainability.

The president also acknowledged the role of Mr Kofi Appiah, Chief Executive Officer of All Day Ventures, for his contribution towards the initiative.

President Mahama made the announcement on Friday at the West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASSA) held at Burma Camp in Accra, where he also delivered what he described as “tidings of great joy” to officers, soldiers and defence civilian staff.

He announced that new salary scales for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces will take effect in March 2026, with arrears for January and February to be paid in the same month, a declaration that was met with loud applause.

“I bring you tidings of great joy. It pleases me to announce that your new salary scales will start in March, and the arrears for January and February will also be paid in March,” President Mahama said.

The president explained that the salary adjustment underscores government’s commitment to the welfare, motivation and morale of military personnel, noting that the effectiveness of any armed force is directly linked to the wellbeing and professionalism of its people.

Speaking in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Mahama reaffirmed his determination to ensure that the military remains adequately resourced, well-trained and properly equipped to respond to both existing and emerging security threats.

He described WASSA as more than a social gathering, noting that the annual event provides an opportunity for reflection, engagement and forward planning. According to him, the activity symbolises unity, esprit de corps, discipline, loyalty and professionalism, values that continue to define the Ghana Armed Forces.

WASSA remains a key tradition that allows the president to interact with service personnel in a relaxed but meaningful environment, while outlining government’s vision for the armed forces in the year ahead.
