Majority praises Mahama’s leadership as cocoa prices draw attention in Parliament
Following the delivery of President John Dramani Mahama’s speech at the State of the Nation Address (SONA), the Majority in Parliament expressed their appreciation for his leadership.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga lauded the President, saying Ghanaians are grateful for his efforts in transforming the nation.
“The Ghana we inherited was as dark as night, but the Ghana we see today is bright and full of promise,” he said, emphasising that the progress outlined by President Mahama is evident.
He added that even the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, would attest to the improvements made under the administration.
While much of the discussion focused on national development, today’s parliamentary session also highlighted cocoa pricing—a topic of great interest to farmers.
The Majority leader preferred to rely on Reuters for the figures, noting that Ivory Coast will pay cocoa farmers between 800 and 1,000 CFA francs per kilogram for the mid-crop starting March 1.
For context, the main cocoa price in Ivory Coast was previously 2,800 CFA francs per kilogram.
When converted to Ghanaian Cedis, this amounts to roughly 980 to 1,225 Cedis per 64-kilogram bag.
By comparison, Ghanaian cocoa farmers currently receive GHS 2,587 per 64-kilogram bag—more than double the price offered in Ivory Coast, highlighting the relatively higher earnings for Ghanaian producers.
