NHIA boss urges investment in health sector under 24-hour economy policy
The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority, Victor Asare Bampoe, has called on investors to take advantage of the government’s 24-hour economy policy by investing in Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking in an interview with The Economist in Accra, Dr. Bampoe noted that a round-the-clock economy will significantly increase demand for healthcare services, pharmaceuticals and related supplies, creating new opportunities for private sector participation.
He stressed that a resilient healthcare system is critical to the success of the policy, which is aimed at driving industrial growth, boosting exports and creating jobs.
He identified the pharmaceutical value chain as a key area where investors can play a major role.
Dr. Bampoe indicated that ongoing efforts to expand Free Primary Health Care and improve efficiency within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) present opportunities for strategic partnerships to enhance healthcare delivery.
While acknowledging that rising demand may pose challenges, he assured that the Authority has implemented systems to improve efficiency and sustainability.
These include the Biometric Membership Authentication System (BMAS) and the One Time Attendance Code (OTAC), aimed at reducing fraud, improving access and strengthening data for planning.
He further revealed that the NHIA has introduced a digital platform, the Electronic Health Services Application (NeHSA), which enables remote access to healthcare services.
The system, currently piloted in more than 500 health facilities, is expected to be expanded nationwide to connect all government health institutions.
According to him, these digital initiatives are part of broader efforts to enhance the Scheme’s efficiency and financial sustainability.
He disclosed that NHIS coverage has increased from 58 per cent to 66 per cent within the past year, with over 22 million active members.
Dr. Bampoe expressed optimism that the planned Free Primary Healthcare policy will further reduce the financial burden on citizens and expand access to essential health services across the country.
