The newly appointed Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Service, Dr Robert Amesiya, conducted a familiarisation visit to the 37 Military Hospital on Wednesday, gaining firsthand insight into the hospital’s operations and challenges.

Dr Amesiya commended the hospital for delivering quality healthcare, particularly during national emergencies, and praised management for maintaining low maternal mortality rates in recent years. He expressed confidence that these standards would continue.

During the visit, Dr Amesiya highlighted persistent challenges in the health sector, including difficulties in patient transportation by road and communication gaps between facilities.

Speaking on behalf of the hospital’s Commander, Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, Brig Gen Richard Naab, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, explained that the hospital has strengthened systems to meet the growing demand for healthcare services. He also disclosed plans to establish a Quality Management Department aimed at improving patient satisfaction and mitigating potential legal issues.

Brig Gen Naab identified constraints such as limited bed capacity in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), restricted space in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and inadequate operating theatre rooms. Other senior medical officers highlighted challenges including limited ambulances, referral communication issues, insufficient scholarships, training and capacity-building needs, logistical bottlenecks, and the shortage of house officers.

Dr Amesiya was accompanied by Dr Victor Hagan, Municipal Director of Health Service for Ayawaso East, and Ms Dorothy Mamle Amanor, Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Health Service, during the visit.

The engagement is expected to foster stronger collaboration between the regional health authorities and the 37 Military Hospital, ensuring improved healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region.
