Owabi water treatment plant shut down due to technical issue
The Owabi Water Treatment Plant, a crucial facility supplying water to the Abuakwa District and surrounding communities in the Ashanti Region, has been temporarily shut down due to a technical challenge.
According to a press release issued by Ghana Water Limited (GWL) on January 27, 2026, the shutdown occurred on January 26, 2026, at 4:30 p.m.
The technical issue is attributed to a problem with the high-lift pump that draws water from the clear well.
Engineers from GWL are working diligently to resolve the challenge and restore water production as swiftly as possible.
The shutdown is expected to affect several areas, including Asuoyeboah, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Pokukrom, Bokankye, Nyankyereniase, Esaase, Akropong, Mensi, Twedie, Abuakwa, Maakro, Mim, Nkwakom, Nkawe, Toase, Afari, Wioso, Mpasatia, Abrepo Asuobenteng, Bronikrom, Part of Bohyen, Military Barracks, and surrounding communities supplied by the Owabi Water Treatment Plant.
GWL management has apologised for any inconvenience this situation may cause and has assured customers that efforts are underway to restore the water supply as quickly as possible.
