Mahama applauds military’s Pan-African solidarity mission in Jamaica
President John Dramani Mahama has praised 54 personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their successful humanitarian mission in Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa last October.
Speaking at a brief welcome ceremony at the Teshie Military Camp on Tuesday, the president described the operation as a “non-combat, humanitarian mission” grounded in shared Afro-Caribbean heritage and Pan-African solidarity.

The contingent, drawn mainly from the 14 Engineer Regiment with support from the 48th, 49th, and 50th Regiments, undertook critical reconstruction works during their deployment.
Their efforts included rebuilding more than 26 homes and public facilities, with a focus on roofing projects in communities such as Middle Quarters and Black River in St. Elizabeth Parish.
The mission was carried out in collaboration with the Jamaica Defence Force, with additional support from the United States.
The deployment followed a formal request from the Prime Minister of Jamaica, underscoring the growing cooperation between Ghana and Caribbean nations in times of crisis.
