Ofankor assault case: Gender Minister updates Parliament as suspect faces multiple charges

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has briefed Parliament on developments in the widely publicised assault case involving a woman who was allegedly beaten and stripped in Ofankor.

Addressing the House, the Minister disclosed that the suspect captured in a viral video assaulting the woman has been arrested and formally charged with multiple offences.

According to her, the charges include causing harm, threats of death, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and inhumane treatment.

The incident, which gained national attention after a disturbing video circulated on social media, showed a man physically attacking and stripping a woman in the Ofankor area, sparking public outrage and calls for swift justice.

Dr. Naa Momo stated that her Ministry worked closely with the security agencies to ensure the suspect was apprehended and the case brought before the court.

She assured Parliament that the government remains committed to protecting victims of abuse and ensuring perpetrators are held accountable under the law.

She further informed lawmakers that the ministry has stepped in to support the victim, providing psychosocial assistance and protection measures to ensure her safety and well-being.

The Minister noted that the case is currently before the court and is scheduled for its next hearing on March 17, 2026.

Dr. Naa Momo reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence and encouraged the public to report cases of abuse to the appropriate authorities.
