Kumasi Wesley Girls High School faces infrastructural deficits; headmistress calls for help
Kumasi Wesley Girls High School in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region is facing infrastructural deficits following a surge in enrollment, leaving dozens of students sleeping on floor platforms and crowding into overstretched dormitories, the school administration has revealed.
The Assistant Headmistress in charge of Domestic Affairs, Monica Boateng Agyapong, disclosed that while the school currently accommodates over 3,000 students, critical logistics, specifically beds, desks, and sanitation facilities remain drastically inadequate to support the student population.
Speaking during an interview with Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah, Ms. Agyapong explained that about 30 students currently lack proper beds and are sleeping on makeshift platforms built by the school.
"We've admitted several students this year, and we were lacking chairs," Ms Agyapong said, adding that "right now, we have about 30 students not having beds. For that, we've managed the situation... we've provided a platform, a nice one for them to put their mattresses on and sleep. But we need them to be at peace, to have that comfortable sleep, so that they can wake up in good health".
The domestic head pointed out that the dormitory capacity has been pushed past its intended limits as rooms originally designed to house 30 students now accommodate 36, creating congestion.
"Instead of 30, we have 36 now," she stated, emphasising the urgent need for a new residential block.
She said: "If we have another dormitory, we will be able to space them out for them to have a comfortable sleep."
Ms. Agyapong added that as an all-girls transition school, maintaining optimal hygiene is paramount.
She noted that while the campus possesses toilet infrastructure, the sheer size of the student body renders existing facilities inadequate, necessitating an ultra-modern toilet facility to prevent sanitation risks.
The revelation came on the heels of a direct donation by the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, who delivered 200 mono desks to the school to address acute classroom seating shortages.
While expressing gratitude for the MP's intervention, she appealed to civil society, corporate organisations and alumni to assist with additional furniture, bed frames, and structural expansion.
"We still appeal to the citizens, philanthropists, and stakeholders to come and help us so that the students will have a conducive atmosphere to learn," Ms. Agyapong urged.
Akwasi Konadu, presenting the desks, stated that he responded as quickly as possible after receiving the emergency request from the school management, delivering the 200 mono desks and highlighting the desks' benefits to the school.
"I'm just here this morning upon an urgent request by the school for some furniture to be given to the first-year students to be able to help with learning and teaching. So immediately I heard, I mean it was an emergency call....We decided that we have to be able to do it as quickly as possible," he stated.
The MP also pledged to provide tables and chairs for the teachers, saying he had been informed that the school needed them and that the items would be supplied as an emergency.
"I've just been told that the teachers would also need some chairs and tables... We'll make sure that we supply that also. We'd also make it an emergency and can assure you that that will come," he assured.
