Police arrest 2 suspected street robbers, retrieve stolen items at Dzorwulu
The Kotobabi District Police Command has arrested two suspected street robbers during an intelligence-led patrol operation at Dzorwulu in Accra, leading to the retrieval of several stolen items.
The suspects, identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, were apprehended on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, while police officers were conducting a routine patrol on a service motorbike.
According to the police, the patrol team spotted the two men riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike under suspicious circumstances. Both suspects were dressed in black clothing and wearing black helmets, with the pillion rider allegedly carrying a cutlass.
Upon noticing the police, the suspects reportedly sped off, triggering a pursuit. During the chase, warning shots were fired, causing the pair to lose control of their motorbike and fall near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission. They attempted to escape on foot but were tracked down and arrested by the officers.
A search conducted after their arrest led to the retrieval of multiple items believed to be stolen, including several mobile phones — among them iPhone, Samsung, Infinix, itel and Nokia devices — a necklace, and cash amounting to GH¢2,690 and $2.
Police said the suspects sustained minor injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital before being discharged.
During interrogation, the two allegedly admitted to committing a series of robberies across the Accra Metropolis. Several victims have since provided statements and identified both the suspects and their stolen mobile phones. Victims also recounted being threatened with a machete and robbed of their phones, money and other valuables.
The suspects have been remanded into police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, further police operations have resulted in the arrest of four additional accomplices who are currently assisting with inquiries.
The suspects have been arraigned before court and are expected to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to tackling street robbery and other criminal activities within the metropolis.
