A woman arrested in connection with the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby from Mamprobi Polyclinic is set to be put before court, as police intensify investigations into the disturbing incident.

The suspect, identified as Latifa Salifu, was picked up by officers following what authorities described as swift and coordinated intelligence work after the baby boy was reported missing from the facility’s postnatal ward.

According to the Mamprobi District Police Command, a complaint was lodged on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, that an unidentified woman posing as a nurse had unlawfully entered the ward and made away with the newborn, the son of Precious Ankomah.

Police investigations led officers from the Dansoman Divisional Police Command to arrest the suspect the following day at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with the infant.

Preliminary checks revealed that Salifu could not produce any medical documentation to support her claim that she had delivered the baby at the hospital. She was subsequently detained to assist with investigations and is expected to face charges in court in the coming days.

The baby has since been safely reunited with his mother, who identified him through a distinctive birthmark on his left leg. He has also been referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical assessment.

In response to the incident, the Accra Regional Police Command has deployed 24-hour police protection at Mamprobi Polyclinic and tightened security measures to protect patients, staff and visitors.

Police have further urged the public to remain vigilant, especially within health facilities, and to report any suspicious behaviour promptly, while hospital authorities have been advised to strictly regulate access to maternity and postnatal wards.

The case is expected to proceed to court as investigations continue.
