The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) District Court in Accra has granted bail to a 33-year-old woman accused of abducting a newborn from a maternity facility in Mamprobi.

The suspect, Latifa Salifu, was admitted to bail in the sum of GH₵200,000 with two sureties when she appeared before the court on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, for the second time.

She is facing a charge of child stealing.

Her legal counsel, Dr Hamisu Muhammed, appealed to the court to release his client, assuring the judge that she would comply fully with investigators and would not obstruct the case.

Although the court initially weighed the option of keeping her in custody, bail was granted in the absence of the prosecutor, Ani Adjie.

Salifu had earlier been remanded on February 20 after police moved swiftly to investigate the reported disappearance of a baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital.

Public cooperation played a key role in tracking her down following the report made on February 17.

According to investigators, Salifu allegedly posed as a nurse and removed the four-day-old infant under the guise of administering medication. The child’s mother, Precious Ankomah, had given birth just days earlier, on February 14.

Police say the suspect claimed she had also delivered at the same hospital and had been discharged due to what she described as inadequate care.

However, checks at the facility reportedly showed no medical records to substantiate her account.

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence ahead of further court proceedings.
