Minority urges Govt to clear tuition arrears for Ghanaian students in UK
The Minority in Parliament is calling on the government to urgently settle outstanding tuition and related costs owed to Ghanaian students in the United Kingdom who are on state-sponsored scholarships.
According to the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin , several affected students have submitted petitions highlighting prolonged delays in payments, warning that the situation has become dire and could disrupt their studies as well as threaten their immigration status.
There are currently 36 Ghanaian PhD students in the UK. In November 2025, their president, Prince Komla Bansah, indicated that over GH₵5.7 million was needed to clear outstanding tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic year.
“Students on scholarship at Birmingham University in the UK have not had their fees paid. The immigration authorities in the UK are threatening to deport them. They have been given one week to come back home. We want to plead with you that if you can draw the attention of the Scholarship Secretariat to remit their fees because, Mr Speaker, the UK government has some strict procedure, and the students have been crying, and they sent a petition to us,"
