Ghana, Belarus to begin negotiations on visa waiver agreement
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, has announced that Ghana and Belarus will begin negotiations on a visa waiver agreement as part of efforts to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The announcement follows a meeting between Mr Ablakwa and Belarus’ Foreign Minister, Maxim Ryzhenkov, who paid an official visit to Ghana.
In a statement after the meeting, Mr Ablakwa described the visit as “memorable and impactful,” noting that discussions between the two sides focused on strengthening cooperation across several strategic sectors.
He indicated that the proposed visa waiver agreement is expected to ease travel between the two countries, potentially boosting diplomatic engagement, trade, education exchanges and broader cooperation.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana and Belarus also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening long-standing relations while exploring new areas of collaboration.
Beyond the visa waiver initiative, both countries are seeking to enhance cooperation in mechanised agriculture and tractor production, which Ghana plans to leverage to support the Feed Ghana initiative championed by President John Dramani Mahama.
The discussions also covered educational partnerships, defence cooperation and cybersecurity collaboration, areas both countries consider important for expanding bilateral engagement.
Mr Ablakwa expressed optimism about the future of Ghana–Belarus relations, noting that the ongoing engagements signal a positive outlook for cooperation between the two nations.
