H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the Africa Prosperity Network (APN) Advisory Council, has highlighted Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia as examples of successful borderless trade in Africa, urging other countries to embrace regional integration to boost economic growth. She made the remarks while delivering her welcome address at the Africa Prosperity Network Dialogue (APD) 2026 in Accra on Wednesday, 4th February.

APD 2026, held under the theme “Empowering SMEs, Women and Youth in Africa’s Single Market: Innovate. Collaborate. Trade,” brings together African leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and innovators to explore strategies for deepening intra-African trade and fostering inclusive economic development.

Speaking to participants, Dr. Dlamini-Zuma said Africa’s single market could thrive only if trade barriers are removed, and small businesses, women, and youth are empowered. She noted that countries like Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia have successfully implemented borderless trade policies without experiencing increased crime or insecurity, proving that regional integration is achievable and beneficial.

“Greater mobility strengthens trade, tourism, and mutual understanding among Africans. The sky has not fallen in countries that have opened their borders—what has increased is trade and prosperity. Africa must therefore open its borders and make the continent borderless, responsibly, with due regard to security and regulation,” she said.

Dr. Dlamini-Zuma further emphasized that simplified trade regimes, cross-border payment systems, and digital trade platforms must cater to SMEs, not just large corporates, to truly harness Africa’s economic potential. She also called on governments and the private sector to ensure transparency in financing and procurement to empower youth- and women-led enterprises.

The APN Chairperson urged African stakeholders to adopt a shared responsibility approach, stressing that building a prosperous and integrated Africa requires collaboration across governments, businesses, civil society, and citizens. She added that Africa’s growth would be measured by job creation, business scaling, and the empowerment of women and youth, rather than just summits and policy declarations.

Dr. Dlamini-Zuma further reminded the gathering that the success of Africa’s single market depends on action, not rhetoric, and called for the courage to implement reforms that foster inclusive growth, innovation, and trade across the continent.
