President John Dramani Mahama has begun his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York with a meeting with Alex Soros, Chairman and Founder of the Open Society Foundations (OSF).

The meeting took place on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

Mr Soros, an investor and philanthropist who has previously engaged with President Mahama, and the OSF are interested in exploring partnerships and providing support for ECOWAS integration efforts.

The meeting preceded a planned presidential roundtable being coordinated by the Foundation with a select group of global foundation presidents and CEOs.

The participants include representatives from the Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, OSF, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler and UBS Optimus, among others.

President Mahama left Accra on Friday night via KLM Royal Airlines for New York to participate in the 81st UN General Assembly.

The 81st session is being held under the theme: “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”

President Mahama will deliver Ghana's official statement during the main General Debate on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

He will also host a Town Hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York on Friday, September 25, 2026.
