Birim North DCE raises alarm over rising accidents on Nkawkaw–Abirem highway
The District Chief Executive for Birim North in the Eastern Region, Hakeem Antwi Abdul, has expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents along the Nkawkaw–Abirem highway, revealing that five crashes have been recorded within the past three weeks.
Describing the development as disturbing, Mr. Antwi Abdul attributed the recurring accidents to poor road construction and inadequate safety measures on sections of the stretch.
According to him, the crashes have resulted in five deaths, left several people injured, and caused extensive damage to property, creating anxiety among residents and motorists who rely on the road daily.
He noted that some portions of the highway lack critical safety features and do not meet proper engineering standards, making them particularly hazardous at night and during heavy rainfall.
The DCE has called on the Ghana Highway Authority and the contractor responsible for the project to urgently inspect the affected areas and address any structural defects.
Mr. Antwi Abdul stressed that the safety of residents and commuters must not be compromised due to substandard work.
He also appealed to drivers to exercise caution, avoid overspeeding, and strictly adhere to road safety regulations while authorities work to resolve the situation.
