Accra–Tema Motorway expansion: Engineers explore diversions to reduce Tetteh Quarshie Congestion
Drivers using the Accra–Tema Motorway are being advised to remain calm as work progresses on the rehabilitation and widening of the major highway.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, March 9, the project’s Chief Resident Engineer, Kwabena Bempong, admitted that commuters are experiencing severe congestion and delays. However, he described the situation as unavoidable if the project is to be delivered within schedule.
He offered an apology to motorists for the inconvenience but maintained that construction activities must continue to avoid setbacks.
To ease the pressure on traffic flow, Mr Bempong indicated that discussions have been held with the contractor to create alternative access options. According to him, drivers intending to turn left onto the N4 at Tetteh Quarshie can proceed along the motorway, execute a U-turn, and then branch right to join the N4.
He also advised motorists approaching from Dzorwulu to turn right near Fiesta Royale and use connecting roads toward the enclave close to the residence of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The construction works have led to temporary closures on sections of the N4 northbound stretch from Accra to Madina. As a result, vehicles heading toward Madina are sharing lanes typically reserved for traffic moving toward Accra, leading to extended queues and heavy congestion, particularly during rush hours.
