The Nigeria government is reviewing public concerns surrounding singer Simi after a series of old social media posts from her early career resurfaced online and triggered widespread debate.

Over the past week, screenshots of tweets allegedly written more than a decade ago — during the period she assisted at her mother’s daycare while pursuing music — began circulating across social platforms.

The posts referenced interactions with children at the daycare, with critics arguing that some of the language used could be interpreted as inappropriate. The resurfaced content has prompted calls from some Nigerians for an official probe into the matter.

Amid the backlash, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) said it is prepared to investigate any credible claims of child misconduct in daycare settings.

In a public statement, the agency urged individuals with factual information or direct evidence to come forward confidentially, stressing that investigations would be based on verified reports rather than speculation.

Simi, however, has firmly denied any wrongdoing. She explained that the tweets were written when she was 23 and described them as harmless reflections of everyday experiences rather than anything suggestive or perverse.

“I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she said, noting that some old posts are being deleted due to their sensitivity for her family.

Observers say the controversy intensified after the singer’s recent outspoken stance against sexual violence, which led some online users to revisit her old posts and reinterpret them.

As discussions continue, actor Deyemi Okanlawon publicly supported Simi, urging the public not to derail conversations about ending sexual violence with unrelated accusations.

For now, authorities maintain that only credible, evidence-based complaints will warrant further action, while the debate over context and interpretation of the old tweets continues to divide opinion online.
