Church of Stories unveil new audio drama ‘The Gold Coast Darlings’ with star-studded cast
After the success of its debut production, Goodbye Gold Coast, Church Of Stories is set to return with a new audio drama series titled The Gold Coast Darlings.
The six-part series, directed by Joewackle J. Kusi, transports listeners to 1956 in the Gold Coast, just weeks before historic elections that would pave the way for independence the following year.
Blending political intrigue, suspense and the vibrant rhythms of 1950s Accra, the production promises a rich, immersive storytelling experience.
At the centre of the story is Sika, a gifted young singer who leaves Sunyani for Accra after being persuaded by Bombay, a charismatic band manager who promises her fame and opportunity.
However, after Sika finds herself on the wrong side of the law, two ambitious Crown agents — Eoin and Victoria — exploit the situation to undermine The Widow, the formidable leader of an all-female band known as The Gold Coast Darlings.
The Widow, driven by her own vendetta against the political elite, becomes a key figure in a web of power, music and revenge.
Co-written by Joewackle J. Kusi and Fui Can-Tamakloe, the series is described as both a gripping political thriller and a tribute to the history and soundscape of pre-independence Ghana.
The production boasts an impressive lineup of acting and musical talent, including Adomaa, Edinam Atatsi, Ayisi, Jasmine Baroudi, Kojo Boakye, Solomon Fixon-Owoo, Timothy Banks and John Abeiku Sagoe.
Additional cast members include Gina Castel, Jessica Larny, Chiderah David, OB Black, Kwaku Sakyi, Mark Cofie Jnr., Miss Lankai, Sɛkyerewaa and Joojo Addison.
As Ghana marks one hundred years of Highlife music, The Gold Coast Darlings celebrates the genre through original soundtracks that reimagine life, love and politics in pre-independence Accra.
The series is produced by Church Of Stories, with further announcements and behind-the-scenes updates expected soon.
In the meantime, audiences can stream Goodbye Gold Coast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other major podcast platforms.
