US law enforcement officers have announced they have a suspect believed to have shot political and cultural figure Charlie Kirk to death.

The suspect has been identified as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old, who, briefly attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021, according to the univeristy. He shot Kirk while the latter spoke at one of his popular Prove Me Wrong university pop-up events at Utah Valley University.

A neighbour of the suspect's family, Kristin Schwiermann, told NBC News she was "very shocked".

She described Tyler Robinson "smart," "quiet," and "never caused any problems".

She revealed, "My son texted me and said, 'Hey, this is Tyler Robinson that lives three doors down.' And I'm like, 'No, it can’t be.' It's shocking.

"That’s not who's in our neighbourhood. I feel for his mum. … She's a great mum, and he has a great dad."

Robinson is expected to be charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice. Charging documents will be filed "early next week," according to Spencer Cox, Utah Governor.

Tyler Robinson's father informed a family friend and clergyman that Tyler had confessed or implied he was behind the shooting. The clergyman, thereafter, relayed the information to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect, wearing what he was in before the shooting, was arrested in Washington, Utah, on Friday, September 12, 2025, two days after he allegedly shot Charlie Kirk, who succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.

Utah is one of five US states that authorise death by firing squad, and Governor Cox has indicated the death penalty was an option for Kirk's killer.
