Ghanaian-born sprint star Jorai Oppong-Nketiah strikes gold again at Canadian Championships

On a sun-soaked day at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility, 17-year-old Jorai Oppong-Nketiah thrilled a packed home crowd with a dominant performance, capturing her second straight Canadian U20 women’s 100m title.
Racing under clear skies, the Ottawa Lions sprinter clocked a seasonal-best 11.44 seconds in the semi-final before powering to gold in the final with a time of 11.48 seconds—her redemption after a season of narrow defeats.
After falling short to Speed Academy’s Elizabeth Tannis at both the OFSAA Championships and Ontario U20 final, Oppong-Nketiah flipped the script when it mattered most.
She now sets her sights on Sunday’s 200m semi-finals, eager to upgrade last year’s silver
Career Milestones
100m (U18 Record): 11.38s (+0.9 m/s), set at age 16 during the 2024 Canadian Olympic Trials—ranking her among the world’s fastest U18 sprinters and setting national U18 and U20 records.
Back-to-Back U20 Titles: Claimed Canadian U20 100m gold in 2024 (11.39s) and 2025 (11.48s), outperforming older competitors.
200m Personal Best: 23.90s at the 2024 Legion Youth Nationals.
Indoor 60m Best: 7.55s, recorded at the 2025 University of Ottawa Winter Classic.
Despite being too young to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Oppong-Nketiah is firmly on track for a potential breakthrough at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. With a growing list of titles and record-breaking performances, she remains one of Canada's most exciting young sprint talents.
