Ursula Owusu-Ekuful declares bid for NPP General Secretary

On the occasion of her birthday, former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially announced her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling on party members to unite, reorganise, and prepare for victory in the 2028 general elections.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Monday, the outspoken legislator and long-serving party stalwart reflected on the NPP’s recent internal challenges, describing them as “a necessary phase of self-introspection and diagnosis towards our journey of re-organisation.”
Acknowledging the party’s current difficulties following what she termed a “stormy face-off” within its base, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful expressed confidence in the NPP’s capacity for renewal.
She invoked the party’s founding spirit in Saltpond, reminding members that resilience and purpose have always been at the heart of the NPP’s identity.
“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt,” she wrote. “And in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno, enduring the ultimate sacrifice for the New Patriotic Party, we will rise.
It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready.”
Owusu-Ekuful used the occasion to rally the party’s grassroots, urging a comprehensive rebuilding process from the polling stations to the national executive level.
She accused the current caretaker NDC government of “lying their way into government,” pledging that the NPP would restore public trust and revive belief in its mission of “Development in Freedom.”
Declaring her candidacy, she stated:
“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you… nurtured, proven, and prepared, to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government.”
Her message ended with a rallying call for solidarity across the party’s structures and the diaspora:
“Patriots, join me, let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s declaration is expected to stir renewed energy within the NPP as it prepares for leadership reorganisation ahead of the 2028 elections, with insiders predicting a spirited contest for the key General Secretary position.
