The People’s National Convention (PNC) has strongly condemned the violence that marred the recently concluded Akwatia by-election, expressing deep concern over an incident involving senior officials from the country’s two major political parties.

In a statement signed by National Chairman Samson Asaki, the PNC referenced widely circulated video footage showing the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, physically assaulting the Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Osman Masawudu, and allegedly inciting his followers to attack.

The PNC described the conduct as “shameful” and stressed that violence has no place in Ghana’s political culture, especially when perpetrated by senior party officials who should be models of restraint and leadership.

'Such acts erode public confidence in our democratic process and risk inflaming unnecessary tensions among citizens,” the statement read.

The PNC called on the leadership of both the NDC and NPP to take immediate disciplinary action against the officers involved.

The party also urged the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the law is fully enforced, warning that “impunity and lawlessness must not be allowed to take root in our political space.”

Despite the regrettable incident, the PNC congratulated the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akwatia, urging the MP-elect to focus on development, inclusivity, and peace in the constituency.

Reaffirming its commitment to non-violence and issue-based politics, the PNC called on all political actors to shift their focus from violence to ideas, policies, and genuine national development.

The party’s statement concluded with a call for unity and responsible leadership, emphasising the need to uphold the values of democracy for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
