Minority criticises Peace Council over silence on alleged threats against Afenyo-Markin

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over what it describes as the continued silence of the National Peace Council (NPC) following alleged threats and assaults directed at Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin during the recent Akwatia by-election.
The incident, which occurred on September 2, has sparked political tension after a viral video appeared to show Chief Sofo Azorka, the First National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), allegedly issuing threats against the Effutu MP.
According to the NPP, other senior figures were also targeted, including Henry Nana Boakye, the party’s National Organiser, and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri.
The party further alleged that Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, NDC’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, was involved in the threats.
Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, the Second Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, condemned what he called a “worrying culture of silence” from state and civic institutions.
“It is in the DNA of the NDC to engage in acts of violence. Even the President has described them as a revolutionary party, and therefore their actions and inactions often reflect that nature,” he claimed.
Mr Shaib said he was “shocked” at the lack of strong condemnation from the NPC, civil society organisations (CSOs), and other respected voices in Ghana’s public space.
He further linked the issue to broader concerns about rising violence in the country.
“As we speak, around 30 people have reportedly died in an incident in the northern part of the country along the Black Volta area.
Violence, regardless of where it originates—be it from the NPP, CPP, GCPO, or the NDC—must be condemned at all times.
The culture of silence on such matters only emboldens further unrest,” he added.
