Minority Leader hauled to Privileges Committee for alleged contempt of Parliament
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been cited for contempt of Parliament and subsequently referred to the Privileges Committee after he was accused of disregarding the House’s decision to remove him from Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.
The referral followed concerns raised on the floor of Parliament that the Minority Leader failed to comply with an official directive withdrawing him from the ECOWAS delegation, a decision earlier communicated by the Speaker.
His continued involvement in ECOWAS parliamentary activities, despite the directive, was described by some MPs as a breach of parliamentary orders and a challenge to the authority of the House.
The Speaker, after listening to submissions from members, ruled that the matter be referred to the Privileges Committee for investigation and appropriate recommendations.
The Committee is expected to probe the alleged act of contempt and determine whether the Minority Leader’s conduct amounts to a violation of parliamentary procedures.
