Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu declines calls to contest Tamale Central by-election

Economist and policy analyst, Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, has formally declined appeals from sections of the public and party supporters urging him to contest the upcoming Tamale Central by-election following the passing of sitting MP, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
In a statement issued on Monday, Dr. Iddrisu expressed profound condolences to the family of the late MP, praying, “May Allah grant Hon. Murtala Paradise/Jannah. Ameen.”
He noted that, after careful consultation with his lawyer, stepping in to replace the late legislator was “not part of God’s divine plan — at least for now.”
Dr. Iddrisu used the opportunity to appeal to President John Mahama and the NDC’s two-thirds parliamentary majority to prioritise the repeal of the constitutional provision barring dual citizens from contesting parliamentary elections, a promise captured on page 162 of the party’s 2024 manifesto, “Resetting Ghana.”
He further extended gratitude to the Minority Leader and Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister for his continuous support and mentorship, as well as to Hon. Aduna Gangdu, whom he described as a “big brother” who has guided him since his youth.
While acknowledging the encouragement and goodwill from the grassroots and party supporters, Dr. Iddrisu stated emphatically that this was not the “divine time” for him to enter Parliament.
The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed earlier this month, setting the stage for a crucial by-election in the Northern Region.
