Court dismisses NPP candidate’s injunction bid against Ablekuma North re-run

The High Court in Accra has dismissed an application filed by Akua Afriyie Owusu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, seeking to halt a planned electoral re-run in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
Justice Ali Baba Abature, who presided over the case, ruled on Wednesday that the ex-parte application lacked merit and failed to justify the need for a 10-day interim injunction against the Electoral Commission (EC).
Ms. Owusu’s legal team, led by the NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Garry Nimako Marfo, had argued that the re-run could cause irreparable harm to their client and undermine the electoral process.
The application also sought to restrain the EC and other interested parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, Awurabena Aubyn, from proceeding with the exercise.
However, the court dismissed the request, effectively clearing the way for the EC to go ahead with the re-run as scheduled.
The ruling marks a significant development in the disputed Ablekuma North parliamentary election, which has been the subject of political and legal contention since the 2024 general polls.
With the injunction dismissed, all eyes now turn to the EC's next steps in conducting the re-run and bringing closure to the contested outcome in one of Accra’s closely watched constituencies
