CJ suspension: Minority accuses Executive of judicial interference

The Minority in Parliament has issued a strong condemnation of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, describing the action as a serious affront to the independence of the Judiciary.
Addressing the media, Deputy Minority Chief Whip Jerry Amed Shaib criticised the suspension as a blatant case of Executive overreach and a deliberate attempt to undermine the Judiciary’s autonomy.
He stressed that the integrity and independence of Ghana’s judicial system are non-negotiable pillars of democracy and called for the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Torkornoo, pending the final determination of constitutional challenges currently before the Supreme Court.
The Minority also demanded a complete suspension of all removal proceedings against the Chief Justice until the Supreme Court rules conclusively on the legality and constitutionality of the process.
Raising concerns about the legitimacy of the petitions that triggered the suspension, the Minority dismissed them as "flimsy and frivolous," warning of the dangerous precedent such actions could set.
"We are saying enough is enough," Mr Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, declared. "Leave the judiciary alone.
Leave Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo alone."
The Minority caucus vowed to fiercely defend Ghana’s democracy against what they described as creeping executive overreach and pledged to resist any attempt to politicise the Judiciary.
