Health Minister pledges support for nursing development as Naomi Ohene Oti wins global award

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government will sponsor at least 15 nursing tutors to upgrade their skills as part of efforts to strengthen nursing education and improve healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The announcement was made at a ceremony in Accra to honour Naomi Ohene Oti, a Ghanaian Oncology Nurse Specialist who recently won the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.
Naomi, who serves as Head of Nursing at the National Radiotherapy, Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, emerged winner from a competitive pool of more than 105,000 global nominees, securing a prize of $250,000.
Speaking at the event, Minister Akandoh commended Naomi for bringing global recognition to Ghana’s healthcare sector and pledged the government’s support to nurses across the country.
He outlined several initiatives, including:
Reducing training fees for nurses.
Sponsoring nursing tutors for professional development.
Expanding specialist nurse training programmes.
Managing healthcare worker migration through government-to-government agreements.
The Minister also promised a GHC 50,000 financial support package to help Naomi cover expenses incurred during the award process.
“Nurses play a critical role in our healthcare system, and the government remains committed to their professional development and well-being,” he said.
Mr. Akandoh further assured that the government is working to ensure newly recruited healthcare professionals, including nurses, are placed on the payroll without delay.
He stressed that empowering nurses and other healthcare staff through skills training and structured support would enhance Ghana’s capacity to deliver high-quality, accessible healthcare to its citizens.
