E/R: MoH, WAHO and GES open boreholes, distribute hygiene kits to support girls’ education

The Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), has inaugurated three mechanised boreholes and distributed 3,000 hygiene kits under the Girls’ Hygiene Empowerment Programme.
The initiative was launched at Teacher Mante Presby Primary School in the Eastern Region, with additional boreholes constructed at Bibiani Newtown School in the Western North Region and Zogbeli Primary School in the Northern Region.
The programme is aimed at improving access to clean water, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene management for adolescent girls.
Representing the Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Dr. Ignatius Awinibuno emphasised that access to potable water, safe sanitation, and proper menstrual hygiene is not only a basic human right but also critical to ensuring girls’ education and well-being.
He explained that the provision of boreholes would guarantee a reliable source of clean water, while the hygiene kits—which include sanitary pads, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste—would empower girls to manage their menstrual health with dignity. This, he said, would help reduce school absenteeism among girls and promote gender equity in education.
