GBC union petitions NMC over Director-General’s continued stay in office

The Divisional Union of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has petitioned the National Media Commission (NMC), raising concerns over what it describes as the unlawful continuation of Prof. Amin Alhassan as Director-General of the state broadcaster, nearly two years after the expiration of his tenure.

According to the petition dated July 21, 2025, the Union contends that Prof. Alhassan’s four-year mandate officially ended on October 1, 2023.

However, he has remained in office without any formal reappointment or legal extension, a situation the Union argues exposes the Corporation to significant legal and financial risks.

The Union cited a letter from the Controller and Accountant-General dated March 14, 2025, which explicitly noted the absence of financial clearance for Prof. Alhassan’s continued stay.

The letter further instructed the suspension of his salary effective March 2025 to prevent the payment of what it termed “unearned salaries,” in compliance with the Public Financial Management Act (Act 921).

In its petition, the Union warned that actions taken by Prof. Alhassan in his current capacity could be deemed null and void, potentially affecting contracts and decisions made under his leadership during this period of what it calls “unauthorised service.”

The Union has issued a 10-working-day ultimatum to the NMC to address the matter or face unspecified further action.

“This situation undermines the principles of transparency and good governance expected at a national institution like GBC,” the Union petition signed by Sam Nat Kevor stated, calling for swift intervention by the Commission to safeguard the broadcaster’s integrity and legal standing.
