E/R: Collapsed bridge cuts off Amanase community after heavy rains

Residents of Amanase, a farming community in the Ayensuano district of the Eastern Region, have been left stranded following the collapse of a key bridge due to heavy downpours.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has cut off access between Amanase and the nearby Aboabo township, severely disrupting transportation and daily activities.
The collapse triggered flooding in the area, making it extremely difficult for residents—particularly women and schoolchildren—to cross the swollen river.
The bridge served as the only direct link between Amanase and the surrounding communities.
While no casualties were reported, the collapse has had a significant impact on local livelihoods, restricting the movement of goods and people, and cutting off access to schools, markets, and healthcare services.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ayensuano, Joshua Yaw Frederick Lartey, expressed his frustration in an interview with Accra FM/CTV News reporter Apelete Kofi-Michel.
He revealed that the bridge had been in a state of disrepair for several years, with no intervention despite repeated concerns.
“This bridge has been a ticking time bomb for years.
We’ve raised concerns on multiple occasions, but no action was taken. Now, the people of Amanase are paying the price,” the DCE lamented.
Mr. Lartey has urgently appealed to the government, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, and other relevant authorities to move swiftly to restore the collapsed bridge and reconnect the affected communities.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the area, who also serves as the NADMO Director for Ayensuano, has echoed the DCE’s call for immediate intervention.
He stressed that the bridge is the community’s only route to essential services and is critical to local socio-economic development.
“We are appealing for swift action. This is not just about convenience—it’s about survival, education, and access to healthcare,” he said.
