Gov't's $1m payment secures stay for Ghanaian students at University of Memphis

The University of Memphis has confirmed the receipt of a $1 million payment from the Government of Ghana, a move that will enable nearly 200 Ghanaian students to remain enrolled on campus and avert the threat of eviction and possible deportation.
The intervention comes after weeks of uncertainty, during which students faced mounting pressure over unpaid tuition and accommodation fees.
The payment provides temporary relief while discussions continue on a more sustainable funding arrangement.
University officials say the funds will cover immediate obligations, ensuring that the students can continue their studies without disruption.
The affected students are beneficiaries of a Ghana government scholarship scheme, which has recently struggled with delayed disbursements.
The government’s payment is expected to restore confidence in the programme while offering students much-needed stability at the university.
