Ghana's 2026 budget allocates GHS39.2 bn to education sector

Ghana's Minister of Education, Iddrisu Haruna, has announced that the 2026 budget allocated GHS39.2 billion to the education sector, representing a 23% increase over the 2025 approved budget.

Speaking at a press briefing, Haruna emphasised that the allocation reflects the government's commitment to expanding access and improving quality education from basic to tertiary levels.

He noted that the budget would support the implementation of President Mahama's research agenda on education, focusing on expanding and providing access to quality, equitable, and inclusive education.

Key highlights of the budget include:

- GHS42 billion allocated for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support free senior high school and TVET programmes

- GHS1.1 billion allocated for the Ghana Secondary Education Learning Improvement Program to improve infrastructure and quality education

- Establishment of two new technical universities in Jessica and Tetchema

- Expansion of the Student Loan Trust to support more students

- Introduction of free education for learners with special needs, with a minimum allocation of GHS65 million from GETFund

Minister Iddrissu also announced plans to improve the digital library architecture and extend learning resources to every part of the country.

He emphasised the government's commitment to promoting literacy and reading culture, and encouraging Ghanaians to develop a love for reading.

The Minister urged Ghanaians to support the government's efforts to improve the education sector, stating that education is key to Ghana's sustainable development.
