First Lady Lordina Mahama’s medical outreach reaches Bono Region
The First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, has extended her nationwide medical outreach programme to the Bono Region, holding a major health screening exercise at the Sunyani Jubilee Park in partnership with the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC).
The outreach focused particularly on HIV/AIDS screening and education, offering residents free health checks and counselling aimed at promoting early detection and improved health outcomes.
Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Mahama underscored the importance of regular health screening, noting that it remains one of the most effective ways for individuals to stay informed about their health status.
She revealed that an estimated 334,000 Ghanaians are currently living with HIV/AIDS, stressing the urgent need for communities to eliminate stigma and discrimination against affected persons.
She called on traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and community stakeholders to play an active role in ending stigma, which she described as a major barrier to effective HIV prevention and treatment.
The First Lady also encouraged husbands and male partners to support women in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) initiatives being implemented by the Ghana Health Service, emphasising that family support is crucial in reducing new infections among newborns.
The Bono Region event is part of Mrs. Mahama’s broader nationwide effort to improve public health awareness and support Ghana’s fight against HIV/AIDS
