Foreign Affairs Ministry holds ECOWAS sensitisation workshop for students in Ho
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFA) has organised a one-day sensitisation workshop at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to educate students on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols and their significance to regional development.
The workshop, which brought together students from second-cycle and tertiary institutions, forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to promote regional awareness, citizenship education, and youth engagement in ECOWAS affairs.
It aligns with Ghana’s broader commitment to advancing peace, unity, and sustainable development across the West African sub-region.
Addressing participants, Ambassador Francis Danti Kotia, Coordinating Director for Multilateral and International Organisations at the Ministry, highlighted Ghana’s historic and continuing role in the establishment and sustenance of ECOWAS.
He noted that since its creation in 1975, the organisation has been instrumental in driving economic growth, political stability, and social progress across West Africa.
Ambassador Kotia explained that ECOWAS continues to promote regional integration through various initiatives aimed at addressing issues such as political instability, economic disparity, and insecurity.
He expressed optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore regional unity following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS in January 2024 to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
He reaffirmed Ghana’s steadfast commitment to implementing ECOWAS protocols on free movement, residence, and establishment—frameworks that facilitate trade, migration, and cooperation among member states.
In his remarks, Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, urged the youth to take an active interest in ECOWAS ideals and to serve as ambassadors of regional integration, peace, and development.
He emphasised the Volta Region’s strategic position as a border area and a vital gateway between Ghana and neighbouring ECOWAS countries, noting that it plays a key role in regional trade and cooperation.
Mr. Gunu further underscored the importance of understanding ECOWAS protocols, particularly those on the free movement of persons, goods, and services, as well as regional peace and security frameworks.
“By deepening awareness of these protocols, we are nurturing informed citizens who appreciate the value of unity and cooperation,” he said.
The Minister also encouraged students to explore opportunities offered by ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), particularly in trade, technology, education, and cultural exchange.
The event concluded with a call on the youth to see themselves as critical agents in shaping the future of West Africa through innovation, collaboration, and active participation in regional affairs
