Chairman Wontumi granted GH¢1 million bail in ongoing illegal mining probe

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in connection with an ongoing illegal mining investigation.
Wontumi was granted bail of GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has since satisfied.
He is expected to face three mining-related charges when he appears before the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
The NPP regional chairman reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, following a police invitation linked to the alleged illegal mining case.
His appearance followed an ultimatum issued by the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, last Friday, warning that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to report to the authorities.
Speaking to the media after the engagement with investigators, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client remained committed to cooperating fully with the ongoing probe.
However, he cautioned against any attempt by law enforcement to revoke Wontumi’s existing police enquiry bail, stating that such a move would be “vigorously resisted.”
