OSP Rejects Martin Kpebu’s Claims of “Self-Investigation,” Describes Allegations as Misleading

OSP Rejects Martin Kpebu’s Claims of “Self-Investigation,” Describes Allegations as Misleading (OSP) has pushed back against comments by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, who alleged that the institution was effectively “investigating itself.” The OSP says the claim misrepresents how oversight processes work in public institutions.

Responding after Mr. Kpebu’s release from custody, the OSP stated that its investigative team comprises senior officers, not lower-ranking staff as suggested by the lawyer.

According to Sammy Darko, Director of Strategy, Research and Communications, the officials leading the probe hold ranks comparable to Deputy Commissioners of Police—making Mr. Kpebu’s assertions inaccurate.

The OSP stressed that internal investigative panels are standard across public-sector institutions and do not amount to an organisation policing itself.

“Just as police misconduct isn’t probed by the fire service, and GRA issues aren’t investigated by immigration officers, the same logic applies here,” the office noted.

The institution further accused Mr. Kpebu of intentionally obstructing the investigative process, claiming he has repeatedly declined to cooperate and consistently raised new demands after his earlier concerns were addressed.

Despite these challenges, the OSP maintained that its actions have been carried out within the confines of the law, adding that no individual is above lawful accountability.
